Why I Grow Herbs and Eat Herbs Every Day

Oregano is one easy herb to grow

There’s something incredibly satisfying about stepping outside and snipping fresh herbs for a meal. Growing and using herbs has become a daily joy and an essential part of my cooking routine. Herbs don’t just add flavor—they add vibrancy to life, and growing them is easier than many people think.

My Favorite Herbs to Grow and Use

While I haven’t had much luck growing herbs indoors, my outdoor herb garden is thriving. Here are some of my favorites:

🟢 Parsley

I use parsley more than any other herb. I keep three plants going to ensure I always have a fresh supply. Its bright flavor works well in everything from soups to salads and sauces.

🌿 Rosemary and Thyme

These are essential in my kitchen. Rosemary adds a fragrant, piney punch to roasted vegetables and meats, while thyme is earthy and subtle—perfect for stews, sauces, and poultry.

🌱 Cilantro

I’m currently growing cilantro from seed in a large barrel. It’s a bit tricky—it prefers cool weather and tends to bolt in heat. I’ve learned to sow seeds every two weeks in spring and fall for a steady harvest. Guacamole Recipe

🌿 Chives

Chives are great in breakfast eggs and quesadillas. They’re easy to grow and bounce back quickly after cutting.

🍝 Oregano and Marjoram

These two are perfect for pasta sauces. They bring warm, savory notes that pair beautifully with tomatoes and garlic.

🍂 Sage

While I don’t use sage often, it shines in fall recipes—especially when roasted with butternut squash. A match made in heaven!

Seasonal Herb Stars

🌞 Basil

Starting basil from seed each spring is one of my greatest gardening pleasures. Watching it grow into a lush, fragrant plant is magical. Basil thrives all summer and often lasts into the fall. Basil Pesto Recipe

🌿 Tarragon

Tarragon dies back in winter but reappears each spring. It’s great in sauces, dressings, and alongside chicken or fish.

🌿 Dill

I just planted dill seeds, though I find it a bit finicky. When it grows well, it’s perfect with fish or in potato salads. I love Dill in my Tuna Salad mix.

The Herb That Grows Itself

🍃 Mint

Mint grows wild in my yard, providing a steady supply all year. It’s a refreshing addition to salads, teas, and desserts.

Final Thought

Eat as many herbs as you can—they’re packed with flavor and health benefits. Grow them, cook with them, and you just might live a longer, more vibrant life.
